Let's get the nasty stuff out of the way first.
Our esteemed governor has issued an Executive Order mandating EVERYONE has to wear a face mask. NOPE-not going to comply. We had our tele computer conference with our dr. yesterday and it is now being told JULY as in J.U.L.Y. as reopening the state. Barbershops, beauty salons, restaurants etc. have been closed for 40 + something days now. I think folks are tired of this...if the Michigan protestors is any indication...
So, this thing with David Etz really troubles me (post Tuesday)...found out his mother, Anna and his father and sister are buried over here at Rural Hope Cemetery. So, off to Grave Markers and found the grave number to Anna. So, off we went to the cemetery, same cemetery that my father in law and his parents and one brother are forever interned on "Fourth Avenue" .

Lucky, our cemetery is labeled with street signs (wasn't always that way) and then little numbers. The Etz's are buried on Bald Hill (found by sheer accident, as we were lost and I so happen to have been looking and saw ETZ) Katherine #68220734 (sister), Anna #680220732 (mother), Charles #68220733 (father). Way deep in the cemetery. The Etz's are buried in Anna's family plot; the Sweetland's.
No, not our David, Anna's father and his wife. Sad...well...before I/we left, I saw Katherine had two headstones, two different numbers. The second number said 67967144, back to the map at the entrance. Saw this particular number and we once again traced our paths back to Sixth Avenue. Parked the SUV, got out and walked...guess what? #67967144 --there is nothing there, there are gravestones around it, but no gravestone. In a different plot; McConnell. Who are they? Just as old, 1909. I didn't think to take photos. So, back to square one.
Funny thing happened once we got back to the SUV, it wouldn't start...of course--mild panic full head on panic...thankfully my husband was with me, because I would of freaked out. Some sort of sensor. I thought for sure we would have to hike it out. Hubby even snapped at me to knock it off, calm down. I just don't do cemeteries. Period. He jokingly said, "I ought not have yelled at Anna (yeah, I yelled at her) and perhaps I ought to remember that when I am in a creepy old cemetery." Whatever...anyways...so, still no David. Sigh...

I enjoy surveying cemeteries. Been doing that for years for genealogical research. So, apparently David Etz is unmarked or was interned elsewhere. That would be my assumption. Poor guy. No proper marker.
ReplyDeleteI think I figured out why President Trump, who was doing so well with the economy up to now, is listening to such wicked-minded doctors. His Grandfather or Great-Grandfather died in the 1918 flu plague. I'm sure he grew up hearing those stories. Perhaps he's afraid of germs because of that. Just a theory, he is just a man, after all. At any rate, we should never have shut down the Country and it certainly is beyond time to reopen it. EVERY business and job is essential. The Government must stop picking winners and losers. It's not right. And I'm with you with not comply to stupid rules. NY's Dear Leader needs to be deposed or be eliminated by lead poisoning.

Well, the idots downstate keep voting him and others like him...I have had enough...and reading and listening to many others here in Hornell, they have too. Folks aren't happy. Period.
DeleteThere was a protest in Michigan yesterday true, but the stupid people got out of their cars and mingled and socialized with each other, no masks and not keeping 6 feet away. They were told before the protest to stay in their cars. Kind of defeated the purpose. Our governor has deemed buying gardening supplies and furniture as unessential products so those areas of the store are roped off. She also forbid landscaping and fishing! She has let her power go to her head! I'm glad people protested but they way they did it had no impact whatsoever!

DeleteOh dear, your cemetery trip! Years ago, Paul and I visited a tiny little cemetery up near Watertown, NY, and when we went to leave, the car wouldn't reverse, and I started saying, kiddingly, "They don't want us to leave!" It was funny, then it wasn't funny, then we realized the emergency brake was on, and it was funny again. I have actually thought of going up to the huge cemetery in town and walking, because who is going to stop you from doing that? My parents and my brother are there. Anyway, I would like to see a country wide protest, but it won't happen, because so many people just like to be led around, and think the government knows best. What a world, to be afraid you won't be able to get supplies for your back yard pool, because they might be deemed non-essential...ugh. And how on earth can one governor have the power to ban fishing?! harrumph.

Well, I can say, folks here in Hornell, have about had enough...being harassed etc..being told what to do etc. My bil works at Lowes, big sign up about not allowing people in without a mask. Sad, sad, sad...so, the question remains, What about crimes such as bank robbing etc...folks are just going to be let off? (JUST JOKING)grin
DeleteI love cemeteries. So much amazing history there and you've found yourself a mystery. Presumably, you made it out alive. 😉 Sometimes, there are very simple explanations. Think of a reason why such a thing would be and perhaps that is all there is to it. Your governor is something of a pompous ask...all the best with him. (I think when he sees other states up and at'em, he will come around. 🤞🏼)

ReplyDeleteGlad you made it home from the cemetery. Did you have to have someone tow you or was it fixable there? The David/Anna, etc. story may have to remain a mystery, unless someone can discover a diary or something. I love a good mystery... I pray this virus issue gets over before July, for your sakes especially!! And I hope God leads you to a wonderful place/job in the near future. One day at a time. Things will come together. Just stay calm and keep looking UP!!
ReplyDeletePoor David. Missing stones? I know the little cemetery across from my grandparents didn't repair or replace damaged stones back in the day (about the same vintage as those you mention). They simply tossed them into the woods behind it. Someone has cleaned it out now, but I can remember the broken pieces when I was a kid. My grandmother had a small obelisk in her flower garden for years. It was stone that was worn nearly smooth that had been tossed. It grew to be covered with moss in her garden. My aunt hauled it to Arizona with her and the sand and winds have polished it smooth and shining white. Could the people who placed that small marker ever have imagined its fate?

(Seriously) My DIL is almost fascinated by old cemeteries and did tracings when she visited her family roots in Vermont a few years back. Being there doesn't give me the creeps so much as it makes me enormously saddened.
ReplyDeleteOh, how funny! I posted about cemeteries today too. You "don't do cemeteries," and I love them. I like to meander through them and just study the headstones. Anyhow...I think it's funny that we both had cemeteries on the brain today.

Just after Mr D and retired we traveled the state of Texas looking for old family cemetaries. Mr D would always put the weed eater in the back of the truck because he knew we would need it. We've had to weed eat our way to several tombstones and grave markers. I always told him. when I stoop down to take a picture don't you let a snake bite me in the butt. lol Yep, some of the places were that bad. We enjoyed it though. Glad your hubby got the SUV to start, I would have been like you and Mr D would have probably yelled softly at me. Note...softly....he's not allowed to do it any other way.
ReplyDeleteAll my family is buried at the same cemetery. California has strict codes too but we are dealing with it. I have been making mask and almost everyone is wearing them. Hopefully things will improve in the next few months. I don't think we will ever look at things the same again and hopefully we will learn from it.

Masks aren't mandated here (yet). At Publix today, we saw four employees stocking shelves with masks on. No customers and none of the checkers. At the clinic on Tuesday, the doctor and nurses wore masks, but not the ladies in scheduling. We are just being careful with hand washing and sanitizing. Thinking ahead to July makes me shudder. I am hoping for mid-May. Please!
