 It's time again for Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 and this week our friend Susan suggested the topic of decorating our homes for the holidays, especially for the 4th of July as it is the USA's 250th birthday.  So, let's do that.

On July 4, 1776 we declared our independence from the British Empire and King George III when the First Continental Congress set forth the Declaration of Independence. We became a free and sovereign, independent nation on ***September 3, 1783. 

***I am adding-thanks to the Treaty of Paris that was officially signed. I just felt it deserved an explanation; many folks don't know about that little detail. Most think of July 4, 1776. Also, those men of the Continental Congress had to do all this in hiding. Alright, I will go back to my corner now, lol.

1. Will or have you decorated for the holiday? Yes. Not much in the house

2. What special little touches do you add to the outside of your home?

"Old Myrtle" has a mind of her own, lol-we had these huge cattails on the corners of the house and hubby chopped them down, grr.

Do you enjoy puttering around in your yard? No, not really...it is way too hot out.

3. Are plants and shrubs an important part of your house decor? Not inside. I do have fake flowers inside. But outside, we have plants & flowers. Hubby chopped down the cattails, much to my dismay, they have not grown back, grr.

4.  On which holidays do you spend time decorating either inside, outside or both? Every holiday. Christmas and Thanksgiving get lights outside. I told hubby I wanted to get red, white and blue lights for July 4th.

day 2 of 'official' vacay...wasting away in the pool. Nope, the pavers have not arrived yet, they/Lowes are backed up--anyways, all is good. 

So....sales, sales, sales...and I said No...

That's right, I said no to the beach. I was so aggravated yesterday---I was floating away in the pool and kept looking at the backyard and the sad state it is in... our backyard is sand and weeds...and I had had enough. So, off to Lowes after spending a few hours in the pool and bit the bullet, so to speak. Enough of speaking of putting pavers out and enough talk from the husband of "having grass one day." OK, so, we ordered 144 pavers that will be delivered today or tomorrow. Like I told him, I rather work on the backyard and be able to jump in the pool when I want too when working in this heat. I AM FINE, TRULY with not going to the beach. He goes, "Linda, you got 10 days, we still can go."  BTW, on sale usually $3.50 a piece and got them for $1.50 a piece, win win. With the military/veteran discount, it was barely $150. They are a different color than what is down for the outdoor kitchen area, but who cares...the outdoor kitchen is red pavers, and the pool area will be gray. My husband goes, "Hey, Alabama Roll Tide colors!" I just rolled my eyes...yes, it probably will look like that.

THEN!!! Such great online sales going- bought 4 blouses for a total of $35, 75% off. And 2 pairs of Sketcher walk ins for $35!!! They are usually $75-100! Another win win. Gosh, I am so bad spending money all of sudden, sigh.

 Good morning. Another steamy day is on tap. This is the last Sunday in  June, how can that be?

I was thinking about my post from yesterday...you know, I like to think of blogging as that, "League of Extraordinary Pen pals." Aren't we though? We do check in quite often with one another, emails, texts, IM/FB...just saying.

Onwards to what is on my camera roll...

Friday, hubby went to Publix and bought home these Strawberry Shortcakes. Oh.my.gosh. Want to talk about good...that was my breakfast, ok truth be told, I ate 1/2 Friday and the other 1/2 Saturday.

I had also mentioned, if we are to be in the pool in evenings, then we need Citronella candles to keep those pesky mosquitos away.

Today we will decorate the fence and get ready for America's Birthday.

I do have 16-piece glassware-champagne and sherbet glassware...so yeah, didn't need any more of that.

We did not find one thing at Diggers; they were pretty much picked thru and still quite expensive. So, we left there and went across Pine Ave/ 441/301 to Ole Cracker where I saw this Uranium cookie jar. My habit is not cheap...I did not buy it. $80! Yep, that is the going price, I was standing there on my phone. Did it hurt to walk away? Nope, because I was not looking for that, I am looking for the bottom to the brick Uranium butter dish I have. 

By that time, it was noonish and we were famished...hubby decided to stop at Jimmy Johns which is in downtown and Pine Ave/441/301. Gosh, reminiscing about growing up here in Ocala when it was slow 'Cala. Yeah, now downtown is full of 'yuppies', new hi end hotels, parking garages and so on. 

Yuppie- a young well-dressed person with a well-paid job.

Which got me thinking, out loud...was I ever a 'yuppie' growing up? My husband, "We all knew not to mess with you kids, your parents had money and you dressed and acted like it...and boy did I ruin that." LOLOLOL---he cracks me up. He is something else, let me tell you, lolol.

We came home and were couch potatoes all afternoon due to the thunder and lightning so no pool time...and nope, never did rain. Hopefully today we can get in it. Wishing you all a beautiful day.

Happy Saturday...

 Good morning, I hope this post finds each of you in great spirits.

I was visiting over at Millie's this morning. She always makes me stop and think and this morning was no exception. She simply asked, "So tell me...are you the checker or the checked on?"

Well, I am more checked on, sadly. I don't do it every day or often, but, yes, I do check on folks. It's not that I don't care etc. Life just gets so busy I do forget etc. Plus, if you (in general) want to check on me, ok. I just figure your (in general) are just fine and dandy. Am I curious? Sure. I just simply forget, not on purpose. For instance, my mom called Thursday night, mom, "I haven't heard from you, anything different going on?" (no ma'am, just working). BTW, my mom, she doesn't check on people either, however, with that said, she knows everything about everyone. Which is weird, because she is truly not sociable. It has always amazed me about her and my dad. Which probably, on hindsight, is where I get my anti-social tendencies.

Have I ever mentioned I am not one for small talk via the phone. Just rest assured, when we do reconnect/connect, I genuinely do care and I am interested in your life. 

So, what is going on in my neck of the woods? Absolutely nothing. First day of vacay and what are we doing? Nothing, well, maybe---a local antique store, Diggers, is closing at the end of July--and we probably will go over there and then hit the local antique places. I have no desire really to put on makeup and proper clothing and to be out in the heat. Just.keeping.it.real. 

Monday we will head over to the beach. There is a tropical something or another forming out in the Gulf, it will remain on our radar. It is Florida and it is almost July.

TGIF!!!

 Good morning! I forgot to post anything yesterday...actually, truth be told, I was running later than usual.

WOOHOO!!! Only 8 hrs. to go to vacay...and I am outta there! Today is Graduation Day, we have over 100 student/inmates graduating today various programs, the bulk are our 70 GED students. We are tied for 1st place with another institution. We also had a visit from Tallahassee yesterday and they will be here today as well. So, that means, we have to play dress up for the second day in a row...ick and it's near a billion degrees.😉--which means no flip flops and regular long dress pants...I wish you could see my face, LOL.

While waiting for the light to change at 441/301/Pine Ave. the other morning, I did happen to catch that Elianos will soon be open. Another coffee shop, like we need another coffee shop.

and our Crepe Myrtle...'old Myrtle' that hubby chopped down last winter. It all of sudden has come back to life. Well, that is all I have for the day...wishing you a beautiful Friday.

Summering into the Hodgepodge

 Good morning...and ugh...yes, indeed its summer here in Florida. At 4:50 am its already feels like 86*, yep.

1. Summer's here!  In the northern hemisphere anyway. If you're in the southern hemisphere substitute winter for the word summer. What do you love most about summer? Hmm...it's warm and it doesn't get dark until like 9 pm? What's your biggest summer pet peeve? The humidity. Just plain ick.

2. What song always reminds you of summer? Vacation by the Go Go's.

3. What's something you remember about your childhood summers? Happy childhood memories of going to my grandparents in Chicago and Michigan. Do you think kids today get to enjoy summer the way you did as a child? Hmm...prob. not. Families are so splintered. 

4. We celebrate Father's Day on June 21st. Do you favor your dad in looks or temperament? Both Tell us something about your dad. Or your husband as a dad. Or a son/son-in-law as a dad. Or your grandpa. My husband was an excellent dad to our son...sure they had their moments, but they were best friends. I am not going to elaborate as it makes me sad.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts regarding the dr. visit and my heart. I have had enough and I keep saying this, of the dr. situation here in Ocala. Don't know what the 'blip' is, and frankly, I am going to sound a little selfish, I really don't want to know and that is where I am and I know that upsets folks. Plus, the insurance will prob. not cover this new test...anyways, we shall see. I will more than likely follow thru with it, but right now...since no one has answers on why I need this test...well...this is where I am. I certainty do not like to be poked and prodded.

Tuesday Meme...

 Good morning...Friday can't come any faster, can it? It was one of those days and to top it off, the Cardiologist kept me waiting an hour and 15 min. yesterday afternoon. I was not very happy and let them know it. Not that it really matters, because my time is not important. So, I was told. Yep.

1. Music. What kind of music do you enjoy? I prefer rock. I simply do not like this new country or even rap. With that said, todays RLA (Reading Language Art) assignment is they have to write a rap. This should be interesting. Are you musical? Nope

2. Travel. Where have you been? Pretty much all 50 states except a few, Bahamas, Bimini, Bermuda, Cuba, Mexico, Canada. Can I count Paris, China and Japan at Epcot? lol What's your favorite destination? Anywhere where this is a beach. lol

3. Occupations. Did you end up working at what you wanted to be? Oh gosh no. Never in a million years would I have thought I would be teaching in a women's prison. NEVER. Do you wish you'd done something else if so, what? etc. Listen, If I could figure out a way to sell seashells by the seashore I would or run rum up and down the coast and be a pirate I would. LOL

4. How do you keep from getting bored? I read, can't you tell by the above answer. LOLOLOL

1. Target or Walmart or another superstore? I prefer Target but haven't been there in over a year...hubby doesn't like either...but we do go to Walmart just because it's convenient.

2. Dollar Tree or Dollar General, or Poundstretcher/99 Store? None ya. I haven't been to none of those places in years. I try to stay away from all that Chinese junk. Yep, I said it---oh wait, I do like Ollies, but we mainly get our pool supplies and books from there--you can find me in the book aisle(s)-always.

3. Best Buy or any other electronics/appliance store? None ya. I cannot go into an electronics store as it gives me a headache.

4. Book/Music Store? Book store. I could spend hours and hours in a bookstore.

Bonus Question! Where do you want to stop for lunch? We actually got out and about early yesterday and was done by 11--so, we dropped off the groceries and headed back out to Cracker Barrel. We have a very nice one out here by us near Don Garlits Racing Museum. The food and service were excellent, happy to see the Cracker Barrel didn't change course here. I had Chicken and Dumplings; fried okra and hash brown casserole and hubby had a Creole Shrimp Skillet and we each had a Watermelon Lemonade (my new favorite drink). We had enough to bring home and had it for dinner.

Today marks the 5th Father's Day without our son. I wasn't really going to post anything about Father's Day...but here I am. So many milestones...life keeps moving along.

Currently, Keeping it Dark...

 Currently, Keeping it Dark. Sigh...

The weather...it's partly cloudy 73* at 5:35 am. Humidity is 97%. Y'all...it has been over 100* here and that is by 10 am. More on the darkness below.

Watching/watched...well, I came home from work at 4 and went straight into the pool and came in around 6-6:30 when it started to rain. Then we watched Castle Impossible on Demand until I fell asleep at 8.  BTW, the pool is 90*!!!!😆

Drinking/Drank...

A few weeks ago, I splurged and bought some Nairobi Blend coffee. Excellent coffee. So, I grounded up some coffee beans and had a nice cup of coffee when I came in from the pool.

Ate? What did we have? Oh, hubby had a salad and I had Totino Pizza Rolls, yeah, how adult of me. LOL. It has been way too hot to eat a proper meal, just saying.

Thinking...#1 so, because of it being so hot and humid...we made a very difficult decision to by window film to keep the sun out. The central ac has been staying/running at 80 just to keep up. Even with the new insulated/hurricane windows (well, a couple of years old now) --it's just hot. It doesn't help since the trees were taken out last year, there is no shade.

It doesn't look that dark, but it is. Sadly, had to put film on this window that faces the backyard/pool area. We have never had to put drapes up on that side of the house...sigh.

Up went the film and the drapes are going to have to stay closed until probably November, sadly, sigh. He even refilmed the front door. As of this morning, the house finally made it back down to 76*.

Thinking #2...why is the current occupant of the White House insisting on ticking off Bibi Netanyahu of Israel? How stupid can one be? Israel has a every right to defend themselves. I better stop there. I am most definitely not liking this turn of events.

Thinking #3...if I hear one more time why do we have school on Juneteenth, I am going to scream. I can't even tell you how many people got written up yesterday--close to a dozen. I am going to blame the ongoing heat with the bad attitudes of late. I probably should include my attitude in that too. I just got to the point yesterday; I started ignoring the nastiness and just started writing people up and contacting my officer. Come on June 26th at 3:23, I am outta there for 10 days. It can't get here any faster, can it?

Feeling...just plum worn out...the weather and the traffic is just ugh. Every. single. day.

Celebrating...will be next on July 4. America's 250th birthday. I see Ocala and Bellview will be having fireworks this year. I told hubby I wanted to go. Haven't been to fireworks for like 5 years. Ocala hasn't had them due to the drought. But I see, this year they will--although we are still in a drought.

Friday Eve...

 Good morning, it is only 4:54 am and the temp says 79* and real feel of 85*. Ugh, summer is upon us here.

Not much to really discuss...let's see...

--the boss just busting my chops about my flip flops. "Linda, no open toe shoes." Me, "No where does it say in the handbook no open toe shoes." He just loves teasing me about my various colors of Sketchers I wear. It is way too hot for regular shoes or 👠, just saying...plus, I am on my feet the full 8 hours.

--fired my ITA (Inmate Teacher Assistant) who got too big for her britches. So, now, I have all classes, including Math. Yippee for me, will it be tough, sure (and so happy to have a boss who actually listens and agreed with me on the reasons why).

--Looking forward too and counting down to next Friday because when I walk out those steel gates, I am on a 10-day break.

--no students today -the am class is testing and we have our monthly meeting so no pm class either. I need this time to get organized.

Hodgepodge

 Good morning. Boy did it storm last night, crazy weather. Not that I am complaining. 

1. June 17th, 1994 was the day of the infamous O.J. Simpson car chase. What were you doing in 1994? I'm guessing somebody is going to tell me they weren't born yet but that's part of the fun of the Hodgepodge. Lots of generations are represented here. We were living in Hudson, NY and I remember thinking what a joke the prosecution was. Just saying.---of course, the famous car chase---and of course, the thought, did he do it? Of course he did. lol

2. What's your favorite summer salad that isn't the traditional tossed green lettuce kind of salad? Do you like fresh fruit in a salad (other than in a fruit salad of course)? I like strawberries or blueberries added to my salad. Of course, I don't really lettuce, I prefer spring greens or spinach.

3. Is chivalry dead? Should it be? I hope it's not dead. And no, it shouldn't be. Although I am more than capable of holding my own door or my chair, it sure is nice when a man does it for me. Just saying. To me, nothing is sexier than a man with manners. 

4. Would you rather spend a week of your summer vacation in Hawaii or Alaska? Neither  Have you ever been to either? I lived in Hawaii when I was a baby. Are they two places you really would like to see? Sure, Scotland, Ireland and some beaches.  How do you feel about 'Hawaiian pizza' aka pineapple on a pizza? EWWWWWW Have you ever eaten Baked Alaska? Yes, and love it. 

5. World Cup play is happening now...are you interested? Nope-but go USA Watching any matches? Nope Did you or your children play soccer/futbol? I played soccer There are eleven US cities hosting matches-

-Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York with the stadium in NJ, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle

along with  three cities in Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey)

and two in Canada (Toronto and Vancouver)-

Tuesday Meme...

 Hello!  This is Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 where we ask just 4 questions each week in an effort to get you blogging, thinking and learning about others.

Maybe we can discuss the town you live in.  It might be nice to find out more about where you live and why you live there. Sometimes we just fall into a place and other times we choose. 

Here's a chance to sing the praises of your town or uncover its faults... have at it!

1. What are the good points to living in your town? Hmm...plenty of shopping and things to do. Could you interest us in moving there? If I could tell you one thing, stay away😁...Ocala is unfortunately growing way too much. It's no longer the slow Ocala I grew up in.

2.  Are the things you need convenient to your home? (shopping, library, schools, entertainment?) Yes...plenty of that. When I was growing up, Ocala was a small town...not so much now, Ocala has close too 66,000 residents and Marion County has close to 430,000. It's not good, the majority of the horse farms are gone and its sad.

3.  Did you choose your town, or did you just end up there? I grew up here and moved away when I was 19 and came back here at 55 years old when our son passed away and honestly, we probably should have been more selective on where we moved too-but there is an affordability issue going on here in Florida.

4.   Is your town known for any special foods, activities, places or people? We are known as the horse capital of the world...why, I don't know because most of the horse farms are gone and have been replaced with suburbs and shopping etc. We do have the World Equestrian Center and my husband affectionally calls Ocala Little Havana--many different dialects of Spanish are spoken here, and I think our son would have gotten a kick out of it (hearing all these different dialects).

So, there was another aftershock from last week's earthquake off the coast of Cuba. Yesterday's earthquake was stronger at 4.9. Yeah...so now we have to worry about earthquakes and hurricanes. LOL--oh and at 5:10 am it is already 79*. yep.

Sunday Randomness...

 Good morning just some randomness...

Currently...

 It never did rain here yesterday, although east of us near Silver Springs and beyond it stormed. We were so late getting around to go to Walmart--ended up going to Ollies first as hubby needed pool chemicals and I picked up some new books (new to me). I also picked this book up for Father's Day for hubby:

After Wally world, we came home and got in the pool; the pool is staying at a constant 85*.

Feeling...

hot...you know, this humidity is just something else, even with central ac. The house stays a constant 59%-60% humidity. Which is why I woke up at 5 am.

Thinking... about some of the questions on the world wide web:

What information do you know that you are proud of/happy about, but others say, "Who cares?"--U.S. and World History. My head is just filled with useless information, some good and some bad. My dad said, "Useless information."😁(from Roger)

What time do you go to sleep/wake up? During the week I am usually in bed by 7 pm and wake up at 3 am for work, on the weekends usually by 10-10:30 and wake up by 6. This morning it was 5 am. (from Annie)

What sweet treat would hit the spot right now? Well, I am going to make a Cherry Cobbler later today... with frozen vanilla yogurt.

A famous quotes often atributed to Mark Twain, says, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." How has the summer been where you are?  ...although summer doesn't start until June something, it is already summer here in Florida. The temperature is already 77* at 6:30 am.

Going to...

get the July 4th items out and start decorating. Just feeling the need to do so. Hubby found the banners/garland for the fence line, so that will go up this week. 

Why?

I am so sick of this anti American rhetoric going around. 

Just because of the hatred of one man who currently holds the highest office. Get over yourselves, either you're for America or not and if you not, then get out. Just.as.simple.as.that. I don't agree with everything that man says but at least be Patriotic. Drop that mic. America only turns 250 once, and the next big birthday comes around most of us will be gone, take that sobering fact.

Making plans...

...the governor has given us state employees 5 days off for the July 4th holiday and we are making plans---and I think I am going to just take off that 29th, 30th and 1st. and do something. At least, I am thinking about it...😏--I need to hurry up and decide. Hubby is chanting, "DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!" LOL LOL

Gosh, this would be so funny, but is accurate...so sad, LOL. All the cute hairstyles and hair products in the world can't tame the humidity. LOL

Currently...

 Another humid morning, well, it is Florida, right? Don't think I am complaining, because I am not.

sorry, no beach, it definitely looks and smells like rain today. 

Currently around these parts...

Weather...77* and sunny at 7:30 am--well, yes and no. It's sunny but the sky is a deep blue. Calling for rain this afternoon. The humidity is also at 94%. Yeah, ick. Heat index is supposed to be over 100* today.

Watching/Watched...we went out to dinner as soon as I got home from work at 4, then came home...and honestly, my eyes closed around 7, so nothing. I remember something Brett Baier and Laura Ingram (Fox News).

Eating/Ate...we went to Pisano's. I had pizza, and hubby had this giant humongous Italian salad, and I also had a Chocolate Martini, and we had Pepproni Rolls for an appetizer. Plenty of leftovers, well, not the Martini, LOLOLOL.

Thinking...

Writing a list for Walmart. Yes, we are heading to the dreaded place.

Sadly, the state budget was passed and us teachers / administration did NOT get pay raises, only the officers did. Plenty of people not happy. Me, I am very happy to have a job, period. ANYWAYS, Supplies are low / nonexistent because of this--so I need a few things. My boss is not very happy about all this--especially us having to buy our own supplies. We are on a severe paper supply too...sigh. P.S. NO teachers in the state got raises. Because I teach in corrections, my base pay is higher than a regular teacher. Still, that additional $10,000 would have been nice.

 I hear my bil (hubby's remaining brother) and his wife will be heading down this way next month (from Georgia). Hubby wants to get the backyard finished before that. It's 50% sand right now, so I am pushing to have pavers down in those areas.

Feeling...honestly this humidity is just something else, so hot and just ick. This humidity just likes to slap ya in the face. It's just...ick.

Thankful...for new beginnings. We were discussing this last night over dinner. I have said this before, but we have been in a severe funk at times...and we were discussing how far we have come in the near 5 years since our son passed away. Extremely grateful and thankful for the love of our Christ, friends, family, my job etc... on that note, yes, friends, even folks who are Christians suffer at times with worldly ailments such as depression and I often wonder about those who don't know Jesus Christ and it makes me sad. Truly. JUST.KEEPING.IT.REAL.

Deliveries...

 Good morning. It is already 75* at nearly 5 am. The humidity is just something else, sigh. 

Yep, so true. lol

Anyway, couple of deliveries to show.

Yay, the new stove arrived. I wanted a simple stove, no more 'gadgets'. Home Depot had them. Maybe one day I could afford a Wolfe or something really cool. This one alone, set us back $569. For. a. stove., crazy.

Yay #2 the knobs arrived. Love them. Even hubby said, "Good call."

yes, taken at 4:30 this morning. Yep, still dark.

Nearly finished...just some little things like trim up on the upper cabinets --and no we don't have a dishwasher. That was another saga neither of us wanted to get into because it required a lot more moving of pipes and more costs. Just to rehab the old kitchen and take a half wall down took $6,000. Yikes, that hurt my savings. Just keeping it real.

Boy do hickey did we get a storm yesterday afternoon. Walked out of work and it was sunny, but the sky was a deep purple. No sooner I got up on HWY 441/301, wow did it ever come down. Beautiful, just beautiful. We desperately need the rain here. I can't stress it enough.

Hodgepodge on a Thursday

 Good morning, all. Apologies, didn't have time to post yesterday. One of those kinds of mornings where I just couldn't get together before leaving for work.

1.  How would you define 'the good life'? Every single day going home and spending time with husband, family and friends. Life is precious, enjoy the little things my friends. 

2.  What's the most used app on your phone (and are you proud of that)? Hmm...prob. my work email. And no, not proud of it. And I have since took the app off because, they get me for 40 hrs . and honestly, that is enough.

3. 'Every rose has it's thorn', 'everything's coming up roses', 'looking through rose-colored glasses', 'it's no bed of roses' or 'stop and smell the roses'...which rose idiom best relates to something in your life currently. Explain. Better stop and smell the roses. My job consumes me, just keeping it real and sometimes it's just hard to turn it off.

4. How do you feel about floral flavorings in food or drink (rose, hibiscus, elderflower, lavender)? I love it. My coworker bought in rose tea, and I just absolutely adore it.

5. Over the course of your life what have you probably spent more time pondering than anything else? 

Hmm...how can I sell seashells at the seashore. LOLOLOL

6. Insert your own random thought here. Boy did we get a good rain yesterday. The skies were threatening all day and then finally around 1 or so it came down for about 45 min. One would think it would cool things off, nope. Humidity is still thick. Anyways, if you are looking to teach your kids or grandkids about America, go here: White House no matter one's opinion about the current holder of the White House, one can learn plenty. I know my adult students have been enjoying it.
